The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) said it has been notified about an incident involving a Bombardier CRJ-900LR aircraft with Nationality and Registration Marks 5N-BXR belonging to Valuejet Airlines which occurred at about 3:32pm (Local Time) on November 14, 2023.

A statement signed by the Director Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Dr. James Odaudu,said that the Bureau has commenced the process of unraveling the immediate and remote causes of the incident, with its investigators already at the scene.

The aircraft, with 62 passengers and 5 crew upon landing at the Port Harcourt International Airport from Lagos overshoot the runway at runway 03.

The statement further disclosed that there was no injury or fatality, as all the passengers and crew members were safely evacuated and  no damage to the aircraft was reported.

The Bureau appealed to the public and the media to avoid speculations about the likely causes, while also respecting the privacy of those on board. 

The NSIB is a multimodal investigation agency charged with the mandate to investigate transportation accidents and serious incidents in Nigeria with the aim of identifying the probable causes and proffer safety recommendations that can prevent reoccurrence.

Meanwhile, the management of ValueJet in its account said that its aircraft CRJ 900 Bombardier with registration 5N-BXR slipped on taxi turn after landing safely and cleared off the runway at Port Harcourt airport at 3.30 local time.

The statement added that the airline said that there was no damage to the aircraft.

The management wondered what could have happened because the airplane landed safely without difficulty.

The minor incident happened at about 3.30pm at the Port-Harcourt International Airport.

Capt. Stanley Balami reported that the aircraft encountered a slip due to algae on the taxi-way which made it unable to maintain the centre line.

ValueJet remains a safe airline and all the airline’s operations are normal without glitch.
