The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in conjunction with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) have agreed to  partner to enhance the processes involved in linking National Identification Numbers (NIN) with SIM cards.

The NIN-SIM linkage exercise has gained significant attention recently, highlighting the importance of aligning SIM registrations with individuals’ unique national identification numbers.

 In view of the crucial role this initiative plays in enhancing security and service delivery, both NIMC and NCC have reaffirmed their commitment to improving processes and increasing efficiency.

In a joint statement signed by the two organisations, they agreed to work together to explore synergies and leverage on their expertise and resources in key areas such as :

 * Streamlining the NIN-SIM Linkage Process:

NIMC and NCC will collaborate to ensure a smooth experience for Nigerian telecommunication subscribers.

This includes exploring innovative approaches to facilitate quick verification and authentication of NINs during SIM registration and activation processes.

* Capacity Building and Public Awareness:

Both agencies will work together on initiatives to enhance public awareness and understanding of the NIN-SIM linkage requirements.

This includes educational campaigns, stakeholder training sessions, and providing accurate information to the public to encourage compliance with the linkage directives.

* Data Verification and Validation:

NIMC will support NCC by assisting in verifying National Identification Numbers (NINs) linked to SIM registrations.

Telecommunication operators will validate submitted NINs using NIMC’s database and authentication infrastructure to ensure the accuracy and integrity of subscriber data.

* Policy Harmonisation and Regulatory Framework:

NIMC and NCC will collaborate on aligning policies and regulatory frameworks to facilitate the seamless integration of NIN-SIM linkage processes within the telecommunications ecosystem.

This includes harmonising data protection and privacy regulations to safeguard the confidentiality and security of subscriber information.

The two agencies said that they are committed to fostering a collaborative and transparent partnership that prioritises the interests of Nigerian citizens and promotes national development.

 They pointed out that by pooling resources and expertise, the aim is to overcome challenges associated with the NIN-SIM linkage exercise and ensure its successful implementation.
