The National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE) has shut down the headquarters of Heritage bank over the mass sacking of over 1,000 workers of the bank without following due process.
The bank headquarter is located at 143 Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, Lagos. The action by the bank happened under the leadership of Mr. Akinola George-Taylor.
Speaking on the development, the National President of NUBIFIE Comrade Anthony Abakpa, said that the leadership of the bank did not comply with the lay down laws for disengaging workers
He stated that NUBIFIE would escalate its demands for justice, calling on the management of the bank to address the issue immediately .
The union said that the essence of shutting the headquarters is to force the embattled bank to address the issue properly and to also send a signal to the management of the bank.
The action of the union underscores the seriousness of the situation and highlights the growing tensions between workers’ rights and corporate decisions within the financial sector.
Following the closure of the bank headquarters depositors and stakeholders in the financial sector are worried that the shutdown may affect the fortunes of the bank depending on the longevity of the action.
Meanwhile, anxious stakeholders are closely monitoring developments, awaiting responses from both Heritage Bank’s management and regulatory bodies.
Recall that in October 2023, the bank CEO, Mr. Akinola George-Taylor removed over 70 senior staff from their positions, while others were advised to resign, thereby further aggravating the crisis.
More annoying is that the affected workers were shown the way out of the bank without paying them their entitlements and allowances.
