Senator Okpebholo

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, of orchestrating violent attacks on local government headquarters in the state to impeach the council chairmen.

The PDP alleged that the armed thugs and non-state actors, acting on the governor’s orders, carried out coordinated assaults resulting in injuries, destruction of property, and a climate of fear.

The allegation is contained in a statement issued on yesterday, Thursday, by the Chairman of PDP in the state, Anthony Aziegbemi.

Aziegbemi condemned the coordinated attacks on Orhionmwon, Uhunmwonde, and Esan West council headquarters.

The attacks, Aziegbemi said were aimed at forcefully taking control of the council offices, leaving several workers and residents injured, including some with gunshot wounds, describing the incidents as a blatant disregard for court rulings and a gross abuse of power.

According to him, “It is profoundly concerning and disheartening that Governor Okpebholo has opted for a strategy of violence and intimidation to achieve his self-serving objectives, disregarding the rulings of all courts in the nation.”

The Edo state PDP further alleged that the governor’s actions defy a Supreme Court ruling, directives from the State Chief Judge, and a High Court injunction that prohibited interference in council operations.

He appealed to President Bola Tinubu, the Inspector General of Police, and other relevant authorities to intervene and restore order in Edo State.

Speaking further, Aziegbemi said, “We are also aware of the plan to attack five LGAs across the state on Friday, January 3, 2025, and blame the attack on the PDP. This is executive rascality and abuse of power taken too far.

“It bears repeating that these unlawful actions are desperate attempts at exterminating our constitutional democracy. We hereby call on the President, the Attorney General, the judiciary, the National Security Adviser, and all relevant security authorities to urgently intervene and restore order before events spiral out of control.’

He described the situation as a grave threat to democracy and called for immediate action to prevent further escalation of violence in the state.

The PDP Chairman.also called for respect for judicial processes and adherence to the rule of law to resolve political disputes peacefully.
