…Says Purported Impeachment Fake, Criminal
The Executive Chairman, Oredo Local Government Council, Dr. Tom Obaseki has said that he remain the duly elected Chairman of the counc saying that his purported impeachment is fake .
He stated this in a statement he personally signed titled, “Public Statement By ,Dr. Tom Obaseki, the Executive Chairman, Oredo Local Government Council ” made available to the public today in Benin.
“My attention has been drawn to a video circulating on various media platforms purportedly showing my impeachment as the Executive Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council. I urge the general public to disregard this video in its entirety, as it is the product of a criminal act perpetrated by hoodlums and thugs who unlawfully invaded the legislative arm of the council. These individuals impersonated the legitimately elected legislators, who are currently on recess, in a failed attempt to undermine the democratic will of the people of Oredo,” the statement reads in part.
According to Obaseki, “This act represents the height of criminality and lawlessness, which cannot and will not be tolerated in a civilized society like Oredo. I remain the duly elected Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council, having been given the mandate to serve by the good people of Oredo on the 2nd of September, 2023.
He continued, “If this level of impunity is allowed to stand, then tomorrow, anyone could wake up, invade a government house, and declare themselves governor or president. Such a scenario is unthinkable in a lawful society. We are not in a banana republic where anarchy reigns.”
He stated that as the Chief Security Officer of Oredo Local Government Council, he called on the Divisional Police Officer(DPO) in charge of Oba Market Division to immediately investigate this incident and arrest those involved for criminal trespass, breakage, impersonation, and attempted subversion of democracy.
He assured the people of Oredo that the mandate they entrusted to him remains intact, and that he will continue to serve diligently and uphold the rule of law.
Obaseki advised them to remain calm and law-abiding while the authorities do their job.
