The Federal Government has strongly condemned the governors of Bauchi, Katsina, Kebbi, and Kano for sending children away from school to observe Ramadan.

The Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Ahmad, who reacted on behalf of the Federal Government stated that there is no religious basis for closing schools during the holy month.

“In countries like Saudi Arabia, which are recognised as Muslim nations, schools continue to operate normally during Ramadan,” Ahmad pointed out.

While acknowledging the autonomy of state governments in managing their education systems, she emphasised that shutting down schools during Ramadan is both unnecessary and harmful to student learning.

Recall that UNICEF had highlighted the serious educational challenges in Nigeria, with 18.3 million children currently out of school.

Among the worst-affected states, Bauchi leads with 54 per cent of children out of school, followed by Kebbi at 45 per cent, Katsina at 38 per cent, and Kano at 35 per cent..
