The Nigeria and Brazil renewed ties focused on Food Security is a right step taking in the right direction and should be domesticated to cover local farmers in Nigeria’s 774 local government areas across the country with emphasis on security for the farmers, farm produce and transportation after harvest to the market or storage centers.
In recent times the Food Basket of the Nation Benue State and the Plateau were dominated by killer herders, who invaded farms and homes of locals killing hundreds for no just cause, burning homes, taking their cattles to feed on farmlands and eating up crops meant for both economic value and human consumption, thereby depriving the local farmers of good harvest .
It is a welcome development the establishment of Federal Forest Service and deployment of the NSCDC Agro-Rangers to work with local vigilantes and Government Forces to monitor infiltration and aggressive incursion into farmlands and local communities by killer herders.
Food Security is a major component of National Security Architecture, going by the statement that, “A hungry man is an angry man” at the base of youths restiveness and protests is the issue of hunger, poverty and unemployment, engaging the youths in what I will call ” Young Farmers Association” will go a long way to reduce the number of the unemployed, poverty and hungry stricken youths from the millions that are ready to be conscripted into vices and clandestine activities like banditry, kidnappings, robbery, yahoo yahoo, militancy and terrorism that has bedeviled the country for years.
The various ties between the Brazilian and Belarusian farm implements firms should include training, grants to young farmers, After Sales Service(ASS) and maintenance for all machineries to be supplied and transfer of technology that is working for the Brazilians and Belarusians
This will go a long way taking care of the security related challenges emanating from herders- farmers clashes and other youth restiveness, insecurities fueled by hunger, poverty and unemployment.
Land should be approved for young farmers at no cost and grants to be monitored by local, state government and the Federal Government Ministry of Agriculture to supervise the success and track disbursement and implementation of National Agric- preneurship to direct the energy of the youths to more profitable ventures especially agriculture and farming activities.
Recommendations: 1. Establishment of Young Farmers Corp. 2. Training by Firms in countries with success stories like Brazil,Belarus and Israel. 3. Approved grants at no cost to the young farmers. 4. Approved land for the farming activities. 5. Establishment of ready market for products or farm produce and adequate storage facilities or methods.
6, Deployment of Federal Forest Service,NSCDC Agro-Ranger and Government Forces to protect farmers and their products.
These measures serves as a proposal to government to curb incessant youth restiveness and protests.
