Urges Citizens To Seek Proper Guidance Before Travelling

The Federal Government through the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has advised Nigerian citizens to ensure responsible U.S. visa usage.

The advice is contained in an Advisory issued by NIS to Nigerians

The advisory is coming on the heels of concerns from the United States Government about a pattern of visa misuse by Nigerian nationals travelling to US.

A statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Service, Assistant Comptroller of Immigration,(ACI), A S Akinlabi ,pointed out the need for visa holders to strictly observe the purpose stated in their visa applications.

The NIS in the statement reminded the public that U.S. security procedures extend well beyond the initial point of entry, urging Nigerian travellers to avoid any form of immigration violation, as this could lead to visa cancellation or deportation.

The statement further that any breach of visa terms, including overstaying, may carry serious consequences such as removal from U.S. territory or a permanent ban from future travel.

This renewed call for responsible U.S. visa usage, the NIS informed is especially targets student visa holders.

In view of this, NIS advised Nigerian students studying in the United States to remain in active academic status, warning that any withdrawal from studies, long-term absenteeism, or changes to a course of study without proper reporting to immigration authorities may result in immediate visa revocation and future travel ineligibility.

Furthermore, U.S. consular officers have been directed to exercise strict scrutiny of B-1/B-2 tourist visa applications. Visas may be denied if officers believe the applicant’s primary intent is to deliver a child in the U.S. in order to obtain automatic citizenship for the child.

This clarification, the NIS noted is aimed at eliminating misinterpretation of visitor visa privileges and discourage misuse.

NIS reiterated its ongoing collaboration with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to prevent Nigeria’s inclusion in any future expansion of visa restrictions.

NIS stated that its continued compliance with visa rules is crucial to protect legitimate travel opportunities for Nigerian citizens.

The NIS advisory also highlighted the need for public awareness campaigns on the importance of visa integrity.

The NIS urged citizens to seek proper guidance before travel, remain truthful in visa applications, and avoid any intent to misuse visa categories.

The NIS stated that with the emphasis on responsible U.S. visa usage, in it hopes that compliance will foster trust between both nations and safeguard travel privileges for law-abiding Nigerians.
