Digital Trends Ensures Nigerian Airports Remain Competitive, Aligned With Global Best Practices–Kuku

The Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs . Olubunmi Kuku, today formerly unveiled Operation Go Cashless” system at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport(MMIA), Lagos, Access Gate, thereby ending the era of physical transactions at all the agency’s revenue points across Nigerian airports.

The cashless initiative is in strategic partnership with Paystack , a technology giant.

Speaking during a media briefing at the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport(MMA), Lagos Kuku said that the “Operation Go Cashless” is not only a laudable initiative but that it is also a milestone towards increasing the revenue profile of the agency

She described the cashless transaction system as a landmark initiative that marks a significant leap forward in our journey to transform Nigeria’s aviation sector.

She stated FAAN is not just launching a new payment system; it is fundamentally reshaping the experience at airports and reinforcing its unwavering commitment to accountability, transparency, and excellence.

This, she said is a comprehensive, cashless and contactless payment solution that will be deployed across all FAAN airports.

‘We are beginning this national rollout with our flagship international gateways: the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja,’ she said.

The FAAN boss stated that effective from today, September 29, 2025, the collection of physical cash will be phased out gradually at all FAAN revenue points.

The airport revenue points are : Access Gates, Car Parks, and our VIP and Protocol Lounges.

She said that what this means for passengers and airport users is faster, seamless, and more secure transactions and that it also means saying goodbye to delays and inconveniences associated with cash handling.

This move, she said is direct response to your demand for modern, efficient, and world-class service,adding that beyond convenience, this initiative is a cornerstone of our strategy for enhanced accountability and sustainable revenue growth.

She praised the Director, Commercial and Business Development, Ms. Adebola Agunbiade, and her team, for coming this far and bringing this project to life.

Kuku said that she will hold Agunbiade to her promise to triple FAAN’s revenue in the coming months

However, neither the Managing Director nor Agunbiade disclosed the amount the agency is currently generating using physical transactions before tripling the agency’s revenue with the introduction of cashless transactions.

“Let me be clear: by significantly reducing our reliance on physical cash, we are building a system that is inherently more transparent. Every transaction will be electronic, traceable, and secure. This directly enhances our revenue assurance capabilities, ensuring that every Naira due to the Authority is duly collected and accounted for. This is not just good for FAAN; it is a testament to our commitment to national development and fiscal responsibility, ” Kuku said.

Speaking further, Kuku said that embracing these digital trends ensures that airports Nigerian remain competitive and aligned with global best practices. We are sending a clear message to the world that Nigeria is open for business, with infrastructure that meets international standards.

“We understand that change can be challenging. Therefore, we have taken deliberate steps to ensure a smooth transition for everyone.

“We have deployed trained brand ambassadors at access gates and terminal areas. Their role is to guide you, assist with onboarding, provide live demonstrations, and answer any questions you may have.

“We are introducing the FAAN Go Cashless Card, available at all airport access gates in Lagos and Abuja. I encourage you to collect yours, and to activate and fund it immediately.

“This launch is a critical milestone, but it is not the final destination. FAAN remains steadfast in its commitment to continuous improvement. Following the successful implementation in Lagos and Abuja, we will systematically expand this cashless policy to all other airports nationwide in a phased manner,” she said.

She thanked President, Bola Tinubu, for his ever-green interest in the growth of the aviation sector and theMinister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, for encouraging our innovations and supporting us immensely.

The introduction of cashless transactions according to her is not only a new dawn for FAAN but also a dawn defined by technology, driven by efficiency, and dedicated to serving you, the Nigerian people, better.

Present at the launch stakeholders, the Federal Road Safety Corp, aviation agencies among others .

At FAAN’s Access gate, the card that was designed by Paystack was tested in the presence of the media to demonstrate the beginning of the system and the end of physical currency transactions.
