…Begins Cashless Operations March 1
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has stated that beginning from March 1, 2026, all cash payments at FAAN-managed airport revenue points nationwide will cease.
The Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of FAAN, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, who gave the directive, explained that the it is in line with the Federal Government’s broader cashless economy policy approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and supported by a treasury circular mandating electronic payments across government agencies.
Kuku further explained that the development followed earlier launch of Operation Go Cashless in September 2025, which, she said signaled the commencement of the phasing out of cash transactions at major airports such as the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA,), Lagos, and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport,(NAIA), Abuja in partnership with Paystack, a Nigerian financial technology company which provides online and offline payment solutions to businesses across Africa.
The FAAN boss noted that the transition from cash based to cashless transactions is aimed at to enhancing transparency, reduce revenue leakage through traceable digital trails, improve operational efficiency, minimise delays at payment points, and boost overall revenue collection for the revenue generating agency.
The MD FAAN boss pointed out that the cashless reforms is part of efforts to modernise airport services and comply with Central Bank of Nigeria guidelines on digital payments.
FAAN advised passengers, drivers, and other users to prepare in advance to avoid any disruptions.
The agency urged them to register for the FAAN Go Cashless system at the official portal: http://www.gocashless.faan.gov.ng/.
It added that physical Go Cashless cards (prepaid NFC cards for tap-to-pay convenience) are available for pickup at FAAN airports, particularly at access gates in Lagos and Abuja.
To get started, FAAN urged them to obtain your card at any participating FAAN airport access gate.
It also advised them to
visit www.gocashless.faan.gov.ng to register, activate, and fund your card and also use contactless payments or other approved electronic methods for seamless transactions.
FAAN, however warned that there will be strict penalties for non-compliance with the cashless directive.
It urged travelers and stakeholders to adopt digital options immediately to ensure smooth airport experiences.
Meanwhile, to demonstrate the seriousness attached to the project, an SMS message was sent to our correspondent by FAAN via his phone number urging him to key into the policy.
“Effective 1 March 2026, cash payments end at FAAN airport revenue points. Register at http://www.gocashless.faan.gov.ng/ and pick your gocashless cards at FAAN Airports,” the SMS reads.
