Chairman, Senate Committee on Aviation, Abdulfatai Buhari, has commended the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) for promptly extinguishing the fire out break at the terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport(MMIA), Lagos .
This is just as he thanked God that no life was lost in the inferno.
The Senator said this when legislators from both the Senate and House Representatives visited the airport for on-the-spot assessment yesterday.
He pointed out the President Bola Tinubu led administration has always taken safety as priority, adding that this has been demonstrated by FAAN and other government agencies when the fire broke out.
According to him, “Thee present government has an intention to always achieve safety first. When this happened two days ago, we resolved to come here and do an on-the-spot assessment today because yesterday was for budget defence. That is why we are here from both chambers. Now we are here and we thank God that there was no loss of life, which is the most important thing, and we are happy that despite the incident FAAN and other agencies lived up to expectations. They were able to turn things around, the diverted flights, one to Malabo, Emirates to Accra. Even Emirates and Lufthansa still landed here around past 12:00 midnight.”
This, the Senator said shows that the response time was high and, as a result the National Assembly is happy .
On the he takeaway, the lawmaker said that the fact investigation is ongoing the National Assembly cannot speculate about the cause of the fire as the body does not want to pre-empt the outcome of the investigation.
He added that that is the reason the legislators are not talking about sabotage or anything right now.
“We will allow them to do their internal investigations and there is also security who will eventually tell us what happened exactly. We can’t give a report in a situation where investigation is still ongoing,” he said.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation, Abdullahi Garba,re-echoed his Senate counterpart’d position that he would not comment on the issue of the cause since the matter is under investigation.
“Just like my senior colleague just said, investigation is ongoing and we will wait for the same before anything could be done on this development.
He praised the Chief Executive Officer of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku for the timely response exhibited by FAAN and other government agencies at the airport during the fire.
” For the MD, she has done very well because within just three hours she was able to achieve stability; that is a very good one.,” Garba said.
Recall that six people were injure during the fire outbreak while equipment belonging to some of the agencies were badly affected
