As BASL concludes mid-year management strategic retreat on leadership

The Chairman of Bi Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), operators of Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two (MMA2), Dr. Wale Babalakin, has said that the terminal’s achievement reflects the resilience and capability of the team, anchored on competence and integrity.

This is just as he also noted that these values are not negotiable, urging everyone to uphold them consistently.

The Chairman said these in his opening remarks at the just concluded three-day mid-year strategic management retreat with the theme “Leadership for Total Quality Delivery.”

According to him, “We have successfully managed this terminal for nearly 20 years. That achievement reflects the resilience and capability of our team. Our success is anchored on competence and integrity. These remain non-negotiable values, and I urge everyone to uphold them consistently.”

The essence of the retreat was to reinforce its core values and position the organisation for its next phase of growth.

A statement signed by the Head, Corporate Communications, BASL,Ajoke Yinka-Olawuyi, informed that the
retreat brought together senior management and key stakeholders to reflect on the organisation’s journey, strengthen leadership alignment and agree on strategic priorities for the road ahead.

The statement said that Babalakin reaffirmed the company’s vision and reflected on its resilience in navigating various challenges over nearly two decades.

“From the outset, I believed in the potential of this project, even when many doubted that a private company could successfully develop and operate an airport terminal in Nigeria. We remained focused on that vision,” Babalakin said.

Reflecting on BASL’s journey, the legal luminary noted that the company had overcome significant challenges while building the institutional strength required to successfully operate MMA2.

Looking ahead, the Chairman said recent progress on long-standing concession-related matters provides an opportunity to further strengthen MMA2’s regional positioning and support its ambition of becoming a leading aviation hub in Africa.

“In the coming days, we will sign the settlement agreement to further position MMA2 internationally and advance our ambition of becoming a leading aviation hub in Africa,” he noted.

He acknowledged the support of the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu in resolving long-standing issues affecting the concession.

“With this progress comes greater responsibility. We must continue to lead with excellence, strengthen collaboration and build an organization that inspires pride,” Babalakin stated.

Reaffirming BASL’s strategic ambition, he added, “Our ambition is clear: to establish and operate the best airport terminal, not only in Nigeria, but across the region. This requires honest self-assessment, continuous improvement and sustained commitment to excellence.”

Also speaking, the Lead Consultant at O’BIA Consulting and facilitator of the retreat, Mrs. Olubanwo Adeosun, described the session as an important opportunity for the leadership team to reflect on the organization’s current position and strengthen alignment around its future direction.

“The retreat created an opportunity for the leadership team to have honest conversations about where the organization is today, where it wants to go, and the leadership behaviours required to get there. What stood out was the willingness to reflect, engage and take collective responsibility for driving the desired change,” Adeosun said.

Speaking on the outcomes of the retreat, ,Ag. Chief Operating Officer/Head, Space and Premises Management, Mr. Kola Bamigboye, said the leadership team was energised by the retreat and committed to translating its outcomes into measurable actions across the organisation.

“The focus now is on translating the outcomes of this retreat into deliberate actions, strengthening leadership alignment, improving communication and accountability, and ensuring that the changes we have identified are reflected in how we lead and work across the organisation.

“Going forward, we will be intentional about tracking our progress and sustaining the improvements we have committed to,” Bamigboye said.

The retreat featured interactive sessions focused on leadership effectiveness, operational improvements, service delivery, organisational culture and preparations for regional expansion.

BASL reaffirmed its commitment to delivering world-class airport services, continuously improving the passenger experience at MMA2 and strengthening its role as a key player in Nigeria’s aviation industry.
