The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended one of its personnel at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, Akomolafe Gbenga Michael, over multiple charges of alleged drug trafficking.

The suspension is coming barely 72 hours after he and three others were arraigned before a Federal High Court in Lagos presided over by Justice Daniel Osiagor .

Spokesman of the Service DCI Kenneth Udo disclosed this in a statement issued today; Wednesday in Abuja.

He explained that the officer is currently on arraignment before a Federal High Court in Lagos.

“The Service wishes to inform the public that the officer in question has since been subjected to internal processes and placed under suspension following the allegation of his involvement in the case in May, 2024.

“The Service, therefore, fully supports the court proceedings aimed at determining the level of his culpability.

“Nigeria Immigration Service awaits the court judgement before making further comments on this to avoid subjudice.

“The Service reaffirms its commitment to excellent service delivery, discipline, and zero tolerance for criminality and will not hesitate to sanction any officer whose conduct is contrary to these ideals”.

Recall  Akomolafe Gbenga Michael, currently serving at the MMIA, Ikeja-Lagos, was  arraigned before a Lagos Federal High Court, for trafficking in 8 kilograms of Methamphetamine and 7.60 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, also  known as marijuana.

He was arraigned before Justice Daniel Osiagor’s led court, alongside three others by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on a 9 count-charge of alleged conspiracy, unlawful possession, import and dealing in the prohibited substances.

Others arraigned on the alleged offences alongside Akomolafe Gbenga Michael are : Babatunde Micheal Olufemi, said to be a staff of Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Nwadozie Chris Amaechi and Nwosu Chinedu Cyril.

Justice Daniel Osiagor has adjourned further trial in the matter till November 7,2024.
