Hallvive Media and Communications Network said that the 2025 NPA International Polo Tournament has kicked off in Port Harcourt, the Garden City with veterans and players showing skills.
It explained that Polo the game for kings as it is known, is an elitist game that is played by the use of Stallion horses (Ponnies) with great energy and endurance to match opponents in Chukkers.
The Chukker, the Organisation said is the playing period of a polo game and ,it takes seven and a half minutes long to get to the end of one Chukker and there are between four to six Chukkers in a match.
It further explained that anytime the ball crosses the line between the goal posts, regardless of who knocks it through including the Ponnies, a goal is recorded.
The rating, it said is called handicaps and players are by a 0, +1,+2,+3,+4 and so on to get the most valuable player and highly rated
Polo sports, the Network informed has produced veterans and players such as the late Gen. Hassan Katsina,HE Kangiwa of blessed memory, our amiable Col Dangiwa Umar(Rtd), Bello Buba, Dawule Baba,Victor Fingesi, Ebi Diriyai,Tony, Osas, Bar Teller and Dr Iyke.
Other veterans are : Alex Fi, Mohammed Babangida, Senator Hadi Sirika, Senator, Ahmed Wadada, Sayyu Dantata, Abubakar Kolere, Adamu’ Attah,Kashim Bukar,Baba Kyari,Ibrahim Abba,Ali,the Shemas,Baba Kaloma, Hassan,Yaradua,late Cookey and late Ojora.
The military, the organisation hinted have officers that plays Polo. They are Major General Adamu Laka and Rear Admiral Ibrahim.
The Police,it stated also have veterans and players and that the newest and the only Para Military team, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Polo Team under Assistant Comptroller General (ACG),James Sunday and the likes of Olisa,Hamza, Mani Bagiwa are also players who plays Polo.
According to the media outfit, Polo sport , which is also referred to as the sport for kings has come to stay in Nigeria.
It explained that the tournament takes a rotational pattern within Nigeria from Port- Harcourt to Lagos, Ibadan to Kano,Kaduna to Bauchi and Jos to Yola.
It added that there are other international Polo tournaments in Dubai,Argentina,Brazil,London, South Africa among other countries.
