A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos presided over by Justice John Tehember Tsoho today convicted and sentence one Abubakar Jaji to five years imprisonment without an option of fine for maliciously damaging the iron rails on a section of the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos.

When the matter came up today for arraignment at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi , Lagos , the prosecutor from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr Suleiman. I. Suleiman told Justice Tsoho that the prosecution has a one count charge pending before the court and pleaded with the court to order that the charge be read so that the defendant can take his plea.

The court consequently granted Suleiman’s request and the charge was read.

Following the reading of the charge, Abubakar pleaded guilty to same and the facts of the charge was subsequently reviewed by an operative of the EFCC.

The prosecution thereafter, urger the court to convict the defendant based on his plea of guilt to the one count charge and and further evidence adduced by the prosecution.

In the absence of the any objection to the prosecutor’s request from the defendant’s counsel, the trial judge, Justice Tsoho convicted Abubakar Jaji as charge.

In his allocutus, counsel to the convict pleaded for lienency on behalf of the convict, he added that the convict is remorseful and had pledged to turn a new leave.

Justice Tsoho after listen to counsel sentence the convicts to five years imprisonment without an option of fine.

It would be recalled that the convict was last year August charged to court for vandalizing the same Third Mainland Bridge Iron railings and was sentence to two months imprisonment by Justice Dehinde Dipeolu on August 15, 2025.

During Abubakar’s trial before Justice Dipeolu , he admitted then to have removed over thirty five pieces of the iron railings and that he sold each between N25,000 and N30,000.

Meanwhile, the one count charge against the convict reads.

That you, Abubakar Jaji, on the 27th of September, 2025 in Lagos within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court maliciously damaged the iron rails at a section of the Third Mainland Bridge inward Obalende, Ikoyi, Lagos, for the pur pose of vandalism, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to section 1(6)(b) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act CAP. M17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
