…As BA, Emirates, Lufthansa Flights Are Diverted.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN),said that a total of six casualties made up of three males and three females were recorded during the fire incident that engulfed the Murtala Muhammed Airport terminal 1 today.
The Managing Director of FAAN, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, who disclosed in an interview with journalists, informed that all the victims of the fire are in stable condition.
Kuku also disclosed that one of the affected persons has been transferred to the FAAN Headquarters Hospital for further medical evaluation and that victim’s condition remain stable.
The Managing Director also said that Nigeria’s airspace was temporarily closed to flights , adding that some international flights such as that of BA, Emirates ,and Lufthansa were diverted to neighboring countries but has since been reopened.
“Emergency response operations remain active, with coordinated firefighting, rescue, and safety teams continuing containment and recovery efforts. A crane was successfully deployed to support rescue operations at the Control Tower, and all fourteen persons initially trapped have been safely rescued and fully evacuated from the facility.
” As an additional safety precaution, the sixth floor of the affected facility has been completely evacuated to support ongoing emergency operations and risk mitigation.” Kuku said.
Kuku noted that preliminary findings from the Fire Service shows that the fire originated from the server room on the first floor of Terminal 1,l.
The agency, however informed that the inferno at the departure has been brought under control hall is now largely under control.
The responders, the MD hinted are monitoring the situation closely to prevent it from spreading to adjoining sections of the terminal.
“In line with established safety protocols, the airspace remains temporarily closed. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) is actively working to establish a temporary Control Tower to enable the safe and timely restoration of airport operations as soon as practicable,” she said.
” FAAN confirms that all emergency procedures were promptly activated and continues to collaborate with relevant emergency and support agencies to safeguard lives, infrastructure, and operational integrity.
Further verified updates will be communicated as more information becomes available,” she added.
